Our 5IR approach

From 4IR to 5IR, with the public servant and the citizen at the centre

South Africa's public institutions have invested heavily in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and most are still consolidating that investment. The gap to the Fifth is not primarily a technology gap. It is an ICT readiness gap, and an institution cannot adopt AI responsibly on top of foundations that are not sound.

Our principle

Technology and artificial intelligence should serve people, accountability and service delivery.

Four ICT domains, one platform for 5IR

  1. Hardware

The processing capacity and secure endpoints that AI, analytics and real-time service tools require.

  2. Software and applications

Integrated, interoperable platforms on which algorithms can act and decisions can be explained.

  3. Telecommunications and networks

Links every office, school, clinic and service point so that AI-assisted services reach citizens where they are.

  4. Data and cloud services

Trusted, governed data and scalable compute, with human oversight and accountability designed in.

A 5IR-ready ICT environment

Integrated, secure, data-driven and built around the public servant and the citizen.

Responsible AI depends on integrated systems, reliable data, appropriate controls and capable people.
